Middletown Multi-Vehicle Crash on SR 1 near SR 299 Sends Three to Hospital

Middletown, Delaware (July 20, 2017) – Three people were injured in a series of collision that happened Wednesday afternoon in Middletown, a local news source reported.

The collision occurred at 4:56 p.m. Wednesday, July 19 on SR 1, just south of SR 299.

Preliminary investigations released by police officers indicated that a red Chrysler 200 passenger vehicle was recklessly driving northbound on SR 1 and had cut off a Honda CRV traveling northbound on SR 1.

After being cut off by the Chrysler, the Honda swerved to the right while attempting to avoid a collision with the rear bumper of the Chrysler. The Chrysler applied brakes after the traffic ahead had slowed. On swerving to the right to change lanes, the front passenger side of the Honda hit the driver side of another vehicle described as a Chevrolet Cobalt which was in the right lane of travel.

The impact caused both vehicles to veer left across the grass center median and into the left lane of southbound SR 1. After entering the southbound lanes, the front bumper of the Chevrolet Cobalt struck the driver side of a Mercury Milan making it spin in a clockwise direction.

Finally, the Honda struck the driver side of an Old Dominion Freight Liner Tractor Trailer with two trailers attached carrying non-perishable food. The tractor jackknifed due to the impact, which in turn caused the second trailer to overturn.

The crash injured Daniel Murray III, 21, of PA, who was driving the Honda. He was taken to Christiana Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Michael Gonzales-Romero, 17, of Newark, who was the driver of the Chevrolet and Brittany Schatz, 30, of Bear, who was driving the Mercury Milan were both transported to Middletown Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the tractor, Guy Dillion, 32, was not injured.

SR 1 southbound was closed in the area of the collision for about five hours as the accident was investigated and the scene cleared.
