Bicyclist, 52, Critically Injured after Colliding with Motorcycle in Laurel

Laurel, Delaware (July 16, 2017)- According to Delaware State Police, a crash occurred on Sunday evening in Laurel leaving a bicycle operator with critical injuries.

The crash took place at around 9:20 p.m. July 15, on Sussex Highway, also known as U.S Route 13, at Laurel Road.

As per DSP, the crash involved a motorcycle and a bicycle. A Laurel woman, 52, riding a bicycle and was trying to travel in a westbound direction across the northbound lanes of US Rt. 13 just north of SR 24, about 3 miles east of Laurel.

The bicyclist had started to cross the roadway just south of the intersection when she entered directly into the path of a 1981 Honda motorcycle, driven by a 63-year-old man from Bridgeville, DE, according to Delaware State Police.

The front of the motorcycle hit the bicyclist throwing her into the roadway north of the intersection. The motorcycle and the rider slid off the roadway and into the grass median where they stopped. The bicyclist was transported to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital by ambulance where she was pronounced dead.

The identity of the victim was not released pending family notification.

US Rt.13 at Laurel Road was blocked to pave the way for police to investigate the crash.

The crash is still under investigation by Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit to determine the cause.
